Earlier in May, I got to join comedian Jenny Yang for her sold out Netflix is A Joke Fest show— Self Help Me. Described as a competitive self-care comedy show, each month she has a few comedians join her to compete for the title of “Queen of Self Care”. Well baby, ya girl here, won! Peep the crown!
The topic for the show was “boundaries” and I have plenty of them! Before the show, Jenny sent us some pre-show questions. I forgot it was a comedy show and answered way too honestly. But hey, I guess it worked out in my favor. The audience seemed to resonate with my responses, so I thought I’d share them with you as well! As always, in the words of one of my mentors, take what you need, take what’s useful, and leave the rest.
JENNY: Would you or your loved ones consider yourself a people pleaser? Why or why not?
BKG: Perhaps at one point, but my no muscle is really strong these days. I say it fast. Slow. Soft. Loud. Sometimes it's just "no". Sometimes it's "absolutely the fuck not". Sometimes it, "awww...no". My favorite is, "I love you, thank you, hell no." I've learned the hard way that nobody is going to say "no" on your behalf. No one is going to protect your time or energy but you. So after almost running myself into the ground, I stopped everything I was doing and learned how to become my own advocate.
JENNY: How good are you at saying no to people’s requests of you? How has that changed throughout your life (especially as you’ve become more well known)?
